Preparing for NaNoWriMo – Step 2 – Carry an Index Card and a Pen

We can’t start writing until November 1st, but we can tune our ears and eyes.  Carry an index card and a pen everyday.  Don’t just shove it in your purse or briefcase – have it at the ready for the conversation at the coffeehouse or the random funny slogan on a t-shirt worn by the guy picking out tomatoes at the grocery store.  (I live in California, we have tomatoes this time of the year.)  Experience it — the shapes of leaves on the trees on your street, the color of the sky, the smell of your neighbor’s dinner simmering, or the offhand comment your co-worker makes that is so full of truth, you can’t help but nod.  Capture these morsels – no need to make art of it all, just write down some of the images and moments that stay with you.  Tune into how and what you observe.  Get warmed up for the next week, do some stretching on this, be ready to receive.
